PRIMARY JOB FUNCTION:
This is an Informatics Systems Engineer position in the Abbott Diagnostics Informatics division that is responsible for designing and architecting IT infrastructure solutions for laboratory informatics product offerings in ADD; AMD; and APOC. The resource will apply their advanced technical IT and networking knowledge to analyze user needs; gather customer requirements; design an integrated; scalable; standardized and comprehensive informatics solutions to improve the IT Infrastructure and architecture for global clinical diagnostic healthcare customers.

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

They will provide service and support for both in-house teams (e.g. Division level Marketing and R&D) as well as field-based employees (e.g. Sales and Field Service).

The Informatics Systems Engineer will play the following roles:

1. In-House Technical Expert: In this role; the Informatics Systems Engineer will be a resource supporting in-house teams working on a variety of projects; including but not limited to:

· Specify and document Informatics product specifications and configurations to meet requirements of new and existing service offerings.
· Research; identify; test; certify; and select IT infrastructure technology products required for Informatics solutions in a medical lab environment.
· Develop; critique; and modify tools to design solution that can integrate well in our customer’s data centers.
· Design in-house IT infrastructure to support customer needs as well as maintain standard installation configurations of customer solutions.
· Work with cross-functional teams to propose; recommend and architect solutions based on requirements and act as consultant to Abbott’s external customers.

2. Technical Service and Support: The Systems Engineer will play a vital role in supporting the field implementation personnel; known as ITSs (Informatics Technical Specialists). The candidate will also play a vital role in problem solving and troubleshooting customer issues and provide level II service and support in resolving informatics product issues. The Systems Engineer will be developing technical recommendations and implementation plans for system architecture in a networked environment. The candidate will serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) in platform and network technologies including system availability; security; scalability and load balancing decisions and trade-offs that are the paramount concerns.

3. Sales and Marketing: The Systems Engineer will play a vital role in supporting the commercial teams (Sales and Marketing) by providing advanced technical support during the pre-sales phase as well as acting as a consultant offering technical recommendations to ensure the solution being sold to the customer will fit the needs of the IT infrastructure and architecture.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITY / SCOPE:
This position reports to Global Implementation/Support Director for Informatics products and has direct impact on the ability of the organization to meet short and long term profitability and customer satisfaction of three diagnostics divisions - ADD; AMD; and APOC. The candidate will be developing and maintaining processes and infrastructure for scalable and profitable delivery of informatics solutions at Abbott’s external diagnostics customer sites using products and services based on the recent acquisition of STARLiMS.
Basic Qualifications:
Knowledge of regulations and standards affecting IVDs and Biologics.
Must Have
Minimum of 8-10 years of formal IT technical experience is required.
Candidates must demonstrate strong knowledge of general networking, server technologies/ services, workstation/desktop technology, internet protocols, remote connectivity and Microsoft Windows Server (NT/2000/XP/2k3) skills.

Desirable
MCSE with additional Microsoft certifications, Citrix and/or Cisco is highly desirable. Areas of expertise should also include virtual server, corporate virus protection products, back-up systems, firewalls, VPN client and tunnel technologies.

This position will require significant interaction with field personnel and customers. Other competencies such as the ability to work in team-oriented environment, adaptability and high initiative are also critical.
